Did You Know?
Fruitville’s story begins in the sawgrass swamps that once dominated the area. Pioneers, drawn by Florida’s burgeoning orange industry, began settling the region in the late 1870s. Charles Reaves, arriving in 1876, is often credited with naming the community after the area’s abundant fruit. Reaves also became Fruitville’s first postmaster, serving a population of around 115. The community quickly established itself, with the Friendship Baptist Church, the first in Sarasota County, founded in 1875.
In 1887, the Reaveses further contributed to the community’s growth by converting their corncrib into Fruitville’s first school, with Miss Josie Clower as the first teacher. Agriculture continued to shape Fruitville’s development, with celery becoming a major crop in the late 1920s, establishing the area as a leading celery producer in Florida. Briefly, Fruitville also played a role in aviation history. During World War I, Franklin Field was established east of present-day Tuttle Road, serving as a backup airfield for the U.S. Army Air Service. However, the airfield was abandoned shortly after the war ended.
