A military fort, built in 1841, once stood on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River where the city of Fort Myers later came to exist. The city owes its name both to the fort, and to Colonel Abraham Myers, who served there. Another more widely known figure, Thomas Edison, later lent his name to a Fort Myers landmark, the Edison Bridge. The prolific and influential inventor was a winter resident of the area for many years. Edison’s home, gardens, and laboratory, along with the home of his equally famous neighbor, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, are now a popular museum located in downtown Fort Myers.
